The Raven

The Raven is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, it makes part of his most famous poetic compositions since it gave him international recognition. The poem is written in first person point of view. This emphasizes the personal experiences of the narrator and brings the reader closer to the narrator’s intimate details.
The Raven narrates the visit of a mysterious bird to the room of man who is pain because his beloved has passed away.
It first starts with a tapping of his chamber door and then, it continues on his window, later on the man decided to see what was happening, at that moment a raven enters his room.
Amused for the behavior of the bird, the man asks for his name. The only answer of the bird was: nevermore. The man gets surprised at the birds ability to speak. He also comments that his “friend”, the raven, will soon fly away of his life, just as other friends of him have flown before, along with his hopes. As if answering the man, the bird says again: nevermore.
The man convinced himself that it is possibly the only word the bird can say. Even so, the man places his chair right in front of the bird, determined to know more about him.
He keeps thinking for a moment, without saying anything, but his mind takes him back to his lost Leonor, the woman he love. The man started thinking that the raven is a demonic creature and orders him to leave, however he does not leave and stays there forever, leaving the man with deep loneliness and sadness, knowing that “nevermore” will come out of his loneliness.

As we can notice the principal character was having anxiety and instability for the disappointments that occur in his past. The reason why he felt this way was all because he allowed those things to affect him.
In order for him to let go of that sadness and achieve mental peace, he needed to reprogram his mind and have commitment with himself. Commit to what truly brings him value, health, enjoyment, growth, love, fun and happiness.
A committed person is the one who puts effort into everything they set themselves to do, not because they seek reward or compliments from those around them, but because they have the confidence in themselves that it’s what they should do.
The commitment to oneself is one of the most difficult commitments to assume because it implies becoming aware of our way of living and finding the meaning in our life without deceiving ourselves. However, is one of the most important and necessary values to achieve a fuller life.
Besides the value of commitment, I personally think the author is trying to teach us another important value, which is acceptance. People who practice the value of acceptance are able to accept themselves as they are. In this case, are able to accept their past and focus in their present.
It is hard to overcome and let go situations, moments and people who marked us in our life, but it is not impossible. We can’t start another chapter in our life if we keep re-reading or constantly remembering the previous one.
This poem leaves us with a great message, which is not to allow the past to affect us.

3 / 3
To sum up everything that has been stated, we need to accept, love and commit with ourselves. If we have gone through difficult times, instead of letting those things to affect us, we can learn from it and make a change to be a better person.
